Nikon d5000 Digital Camera Vs D90
Two of the most popular digital SLR cameras on the market today from Nikon are the d5000 and the d90. The d5000 and the Nikon d90 sport the exact same resolution of 12.3 megapixels. Although the d90 has an advertised resolution of 12.3 megapixels, the effective resolution is 12.3 mp.
There are several subtle differences between these two cameras, but the main and most striking difference is the display on the rear of each camera. The Nikon d5000 includes a 2.7 inch TFT display with a resolution of 230,000 total pixels while the D9o’s display comes in at 3 inches and more that 3 times the resolution of the d5000 at an incredible 920,000 pixels. The difference is striking and is a serious consideration for photographers.
With an identical resolution, both cameras can produce pictures as large as 4,288 x 2,848 pixels allowing you to make prints on a home color printer up to 20 by 14 inches (obviously you have to have a printer that will print that large).
Another feature difference is the continuous frames each camera is able to shoot. The d90 can shoot at a continuous 4.5 fps while the d5000 is able to shoot at 4 fps. That’s only 1 extra picture every 2 seconds difference between the cameras, but that extra shot may be the photo that got away. One more big difference is that the d90 has an in-body lens focus motor while the d 5000 does not. That may or may not be a big consideration for you if you have older lenses.
Many reviews tout the price difference in these two digital SLR cameras as significant, but honestly, as much as digital cameras used to be just 4 or 5 years ago and where they are priced at now, the difference is minimal. The d5000 kit from Amazon.com that includes a Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens is priced at around $400 less than a D90 kit, again at Amazon, that includes a 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Nikkor zoom lens.
This price may be significant for some, but it just depends on what your budget is and how you intend to use your new camera.
